Discover the original gold mining town of the South Island. Lawrence is a true Otago hidden gem where gold was first discovered in 1861 and sparked the famous South Island gold rush. Take a trip back in time on our full day heritage tour guided by one of our expert guides sharing the local history and many stories from back in the day. The township is unique and charming with a variety of heritage buildings and historical locations. In the morning the tour takes you to Gabriel’s Gully where the famous Blue Spur Mine resides and home to the first major gold discovery in Otago. You will have guided tours of 2 local museums bringing to life the gold rush days. Exclusive entry to Private Heritage sites only available with the tour. You will also be able to attempt some gold panning. Explore Lawrence and Gabriel’s Gully travelling by small bus and learn all about the area’s rich heritage and much more along the way.
Lunch is not included. You will have an hour for lunch in town.
After lunch you will resume the tour with a historical building tour of the town and ends with visiting some other must-see Lawrence Heritage sites. We then drive back to Dunedin where the tour ends.
Departs daily from Dunedin centre and Balclutha centre in front of the Isite at 830am. Returns at 530pm. Minimum of 4 people. Child rate is 14 years old & under.
Tour Departure Point The departure point for the full day Lawrence heritage tour is at the Isite at the Octagon in Dunedin Centre or the Isite in Balclutha centre. Please arrive at 845am for check in. 15 mins prior to the scheduled tour start time.
Pick-ups & Drop-offs Additional pick-up and drop-off from Milton (940am) on the way from Dunedin to Lawrence. Drop off in Milton will be done at the end of the tour on the way back to Dunedin at approximately 5pm.
Your Milton pickup must be requested when making your booking, our reservations team will confirm your pickup time via email.
Food & Drink Lunch is not included in the tour, there are cafes in town and the tour allocates an hour lunch break. Please feel free to bring food or a snack with you. We do offer a complimentary Goodie Chocolte/cake box and tea during the morning.
Fitness Some walking is required during the tour. A medium level of fitness is preferable as the terrain includes some hilly footpaths and steep terrain.
Clothing & Footwear Some of the tour is operated outside. The weather can change very rapidly so we recommend to bring along something warm and waterproof just in case. The tour guide will provide a weather report at the beginning of the tour. Functional sporting comfortable footwear is recommended.
Medicines & Health Conditions Personal medicines should be carried on all tours. Any health condition which could potentially be a problem should be disclosed before the commencement of a tour. The terrain visited is not suitable for persons with walking disabilities and wheelchairs.
Cancellation Policy
We will provide A full refund or credit for a future date for cancellations more than 24h prior to your tour. We reserve the right to charge up to 100% for bookings cancelled within 24h of your scheduled start time, or for no-shows.
If your tour is cancelled by NZ Agency Tours we will try to reschedule your tour to another day (subject to availability). If this is not possible we will provide a full refund.
